History
Originally staged within Pukekura Park, the Christmas Carols run by Youth For Christ started over 17 years ago. Attracting larger and larger crowds each year to this festive outing meant that a larger venue had to be sourced. With the backing of New Plymouth Brass Band, Christmas At The Bowl held its inaugural production in 1999. Focussing on the spirit of Christmas and providing an event where families can enjoy an outing at an expensive time of year for only a gold coin donation has been a driving aim for the organising committee. Each year the event showcases Taranaki talent along with special guest appearances and free carol books, candles and candle holders are handed out to all spectators to ensure their participation in the evening.
Performers are not paid but the opportunity to participate in an annual event with a viewing public of between 8-10,000 people is reward enough.
Sponsorship from Taranaki businesses is integral to ensuring this event remains an iconic Christmas Taranaki outing and a special “Christmas At The Bowl Trust” was formed in 2005 to facilitate the ongoing financial administration. A working committee is formed each year to liaise with the director and ensure all running aspects of the show are catered for.
